The greatest projects usually come up from the toughest situations. This one is no exception. While the only residents in this structure once were only cows, now the building accommodates a young family and the interior design is so aesthetically pleasant. Working together with Philipp Möller, a Munich architect, the clients came up with the idea for a radical barn renovation that would join two buildings and open up the interiors, but keep the exterior structures intact. The layout of the farmhouse’s first two floors remained basically the same, but the attic space above was opened up and so was the interior of the barn, Mr. Schnabl said: “We removed some walls and changed the position of others to make an open and comfortable living space.” Now, the space could be best described as a traditional farmhouse with a modern twist and cozy environment for a young family. The furnishings are modestly laid out all over the space. “Our furniture is mostly vintage design items which we found online or at antiques fairs,” Mr. Schnabl said. “We wanted to style the house with vintage masterpieces which would not look out of place in such traditional surroundings.”A home with so much room to spread out in could easily feel cold or cavernous. But with the warmth of all that exposed wood, Mr. Schnabl said, the house is surprisingly cozy.“It’s great to have so much space,” he said. “Every person has their own area and we can meet in different rooms. There are so many ways, in so many places, that we can be together.”
