A small apartment in Venice was designed to protect it from the flooding city’s waterways. The client approached architecture studio Act Romegialli to restore the ground floor of a residence on a canal-side street in the Cannaregio district of the city. The architects converted this old workshop into a beautiful apartment by installing a reinforced concrete container within the apartment’s perimeter, with the sides rising above the former entrance level.

The architects then integrated furnishings and internal partitions into this concrete structure to create a bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen. “Hydraulic engineering and technical infrastructure were used as the starting point to solve the overall reconfiguration of the internal architectural design solution,” said the architects.
