An Old Townhouse renovation in Porto by Pedro Ferreira Architecture Studio
A 19th century townhouse in Porto was renovated by Pedro Ferreira Architecture Studio. The architects have preserved the original details and added white boxes with kitchens and bathrooms inside them. Due to the large numbers of tourists visiting Porto city, one of the main tasks were to convert the building into the maximum number of rental apartments. As architects say, the main concern was to maintain the building’s characteristics such as romanticism of the 19th century, typology and others. They did this by preserving existing walls, floors, ceilings, doors and windows. Kitchens, bathrooms and storage spaces were installed inside the stark white boxes which determines the difference between the old and new. In order to bring out the beauty of the old house, the boxes were made abstract and shapeless.
