HAO Design studio renovated an apartment in the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Before the renovation, the apartment was divided into many small rooms that received very little natural light. The designer’s main goal was to transform the place into an apartment for a family, so they added an upper mezzanine level in which there are a master’s bedroom and a dressing room. The mezzanine level can be reached by a wooden stairway which also serves as a storage place. The main living space, an open-plan kitchen and dining room is located on the lower level, together with another bedroom and a bathroom. Pinewood was used throughout the apartment and green-painted cupboards match the dining table top, traditional tatami mats in the lower bedroom, and master’s bedroom walls in the mezzanine level. Huge amounts of glazing were used to ensure that the apartment receives enough natural light and also to create a visual connection between the two floors.
